Chapter 31 Vocabulary
1. mandala- states organized as rings of power around a central court
2. Khmer Empire- powerful mandala that lasted roughly from the 9th to the 15th centuries in what is now Cambodia
3. Indochina- a French colony made up of Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, suffered decades of turmoil.
4. Vietnam War- the military conflict resulting from the American involvement in South Vietnam toprevent its takeover by Communist North Vietnam.
5. ASEAN- the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, an alliance that promotes economic growth and peace in the reagon. (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand are a part of this org.)
6. Micronesia- one of the three regions of Oceania, meaning “tiny islands”
7. Melanesia- one of the three regions of Oceania, meaning “black islands”
8. Polynesia- one of the three regins of Oceania, meaning “many islands”
9. subsistence activities- activities in which a family produces only the food, clothing and shlether they themselves need
10. copra- the dried meat of coconuts, a chief crop
11. taro- a major crop, it is a plant with a starchy root
12. penal colony- a plcae to send prisoners
13. Aboriginal people- migrated to Australia from Asia at least 40,000 years ago
14. Maori- migrated from Polynesia more then 1000 years ago, they were the first to settle in New Zealand
15. Treaty of Waitangi - signed by the British and several Maori tribes in 1840, giving Britan control over New Zealand
16. pakehas- a Maori term for white people
